Beatles and Herman, Part II

Draper Days, Day 2

We did go last night to the concert at the Draper Park. Phil Dirt and the Dozers were the opening act and the the Stars of Beatlemania were the headliners. Basically, the headliners were the opening act of Friday night plus 3 other guys playing John, George and Ringo. Don’t get me wrong, they were quite good. They even recruited some local string players. However, it was more like a play, where they acted their parts, down to the “Thank you very much” in the faux Liverpool accent, even though they were from California and New Jersey. The musician playing John was actually Hispanic. Throughout the show they wore various costumes, early Beatles skinny ties and black suits, Sergeant Pepper band uniforms and then the “Let It Be” rooftop concert/album cover costumes. It was entertaining, but lacked the energy of Peter Noone and the Herman’s Hermits.

Phil Dirt and the Dozers were more fun, they played Beach Boys, Jan and Dean, Sam Cooke and a lot of other American late 50’s early 60’s music. People would actually get up and dance a bit for them. Beatlemania only had two danceable tunes, really and those were “You Say it’s Your Birthday” and “Twist and Shout,“ which was one of the encores. The other was, as you might expect, ”The Long and Winding Road.“ I totally called that one.

I did take my camera to this show and let Jase, my nephew, take some pictures. His vision and point of view are fun. He could turn into a good photographer one day. He likes faces, so that is what he took.
